Wedding Day Blues
If they have not done so already, employers should be checking their contracts of employment now to determine whether employees are entitled to the day off. If unsure, advice should be sought immediately.
Many employees may be assuming that they will be getting the day off. A decision with regards to how the day will be dealt with should therefore be made (and communicated to employees) as soon as possible. This is particularly important if employees are not being given the day off, as it will allow time to deal with any issues that may arise.
Ultimately, how the 29th April is handled will be a question for each individual business. However, with an extra public holiday also announced for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year, employers should bear in mind that the approach taken this year may be seen as potentially setting a precedent for dealing with these issues in the future.
